The Ministry of Education (MoE) has won the World Summit on the
Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2022 award for the “Digital Education
Environment” project, under the e-learning category. This new achievement
establishes the leadership of UAE in the education sector and culminates its
efforts in the area of innovation and sustainability. The smart learning is
currently regarded by Emirati schools as an integrated educational system that depends
frameworks and supporting solutions and systems that offer innovative
educational solutions, some of which rely on artificial intelligence.
The WSIS Forum announced the winners officially during a ceremony held
in Switzerland. The project gained the highest number of votes in its category. It was
chosen to be the winning project, based on a review by a group of experts of
the five highest voted projects, out of 360 projects nominated for the voting
phase that had taken place earlier and saw more than 1.3 million votes cast.
The WSIS Forum 2022 is the biggest annual congregation of the
“Information Technology” community for development. It was co-organized by
the International Telecommunication Union, UNESCO, the UN Development Program,
and UNCTAD, in close cooperation with the participants of the WSIS Action Line.
The forum is an active mechanism to coordinate the implementation activities of
the stakeholders, exchange information, and build knowledge.
His Excellency Hamad Al-Yahyaei, MoE’s Assistant Undersecretary for the
Curriculum and Evaluation Sector, said that the UAE, thanks to the vision of
the wise leadership, is a role-model to be followed in terms of leading
initiatives, technical solutions, and qualitative innovations. He added that
the aim was to serve humanity and future needs, achieve strategic objectives,
maintain sustainability of development and prosperity, and make information
technology, knowledge, education, and innovation accessible to future
H.E. pointed out that launching the Smart Learning Initiative by His
Highness Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of UAE, Prime Minister,
Ruler of Dubai, may Allah preserve him, aimed to create a unique educational
environment at schools, offer “Smart Classrooms,” so that students would make
use of smart devices as a means of obtaining knowledge. He added that
initiative also included specialized training programs for teachers, introducing
new curricula for this purpose, and launching creative, integrated smart
learning initiatives, with the participation of stakeholders, such as teachers
and parents, to promote the learning experience.
He explained that awarding the MoE the prize reflected the leadership of
the education system in the country, through the integrated digital
educational environment system project, which included an integrated set of
educational systems and supporting tools, linked by a unified platform. He
added that this would allow all parties of the educational process (students,
teachers, and parents) to participate in the teaching and learning process.
He said that the integrated, digital education environment system
depended on the educational frameworks and supporting solutions and systems
that offered innovative educational solutions, some of which rely on artificial
intelligence and cover all education aspects. He added that this included the
students’ data management platform, to enable teachers and central management
to perform all the administrative tasks assigned to them and education
management and systems.
H.E. added that this global competition aimed to choose the best
electronic applications and contents that aimed to create a competitive,
technological environment between world countries. The competition includes
representatives from 168 countries from world continents. It is held every two
years since 2003. It focuses on projects that effectively, creatively,
and innovatively affect the digitization of cultural, scientific, and
H.E. Al-Yahyaei reiterated that the WSIS Forum was a cooperation
platform for countries to implement technological projects, exchange
information and expertise, transfer knowledge and sciences, exchange best
technical practices, and continue
to get into partnerships to advance development goals. He said that the forum
was an opportunity for communication, learning, and participation.
